For a lot of people, the mouth falls open at some point in the night. You do not feel it happen. You feel it in the morning: a dry mouth, and a start to the day that does not match the hours you spent in bed. Plenty of people write mouth tape off the moment they hear about it. Here is why some of them try it anyway, and what we changed.
1. Your mouth is the real problem

Your jaw relaxes, your lips part, and for part of the night the air skips your nose and goes straight in through your mouth. The nose is built for this job. It warms and humidifies the air and traps dust and pollen. Air that comes in through the mouth skips all of that.
We have written up what the research on nasal breathing and mouth taping actually measured, with the sources, on our why nose breathing page. For a healthy adult who breathes freely through the nose, tape may help keep the lips together and may reduce morning dry mouth. We would rather tell you the limit than oversell it.
2. The first fear is suffocating. So we cut a slit.
Before we made ours, we read a few thousand reviews of the tapes already on the market. The same worry came up first, again and again: what if I cannot breathe?
So the strip has a short slit down the middle. Your lips rest together and your nose does the breathing, exactly as it should. If your nose feels tight in the night, air still passes through the slit, and the strip peels off in a second. The strip is there to remind your lips to stay closed. It was never meant to seal the mouth shut.
Who should skip it. Anyone who cannot breathe comfortably through the nose, has a cold or blocked sinuses, has been drinking alcohol or taken sedatives, or has been told they have a breathing disorder during sleep. It is not for children. Do the nose test first: sit down, close your lips and breathe through your nose for two minutes. If that feels like work, do not tape.
3. Plain tape gets judged in the morning

Going to sleep with tape on is the easy part. The part that decides whether you use it again is the morning: does it come off without pulling, and does it leave anything behind?
Stillseal is a soft, elastic fabric strip with a hypoallergenic adhesive chosen to hold for about eight hours and release in the morning. Lift a corner and peel slowly toward the center. It is made to lift away without taking skin with it. If a little adhesive stays behind, a drop of oil or balm lifts it.
4. When tape does not stick, it is usually not the tape

People who give up on mouth tape usually tell one of three stories. Two have an easy fix. The third is worth knowing before you buy.
- It came off in the night. Balm, night cream or any oil near the lips will lift any strip. Do your skincare first, then wipe the lips with water and dry them before the strip goes on.
- It never felt secure. The strip goes on relaxed lips, not pursed ones, with the slit centered on the line of the mouth. One light press with two fingers is enough.
- I have a beard. Stubble is fine. A full beard that covers the lips will hold less well, and we would rather tell you that now than after you have bought a box.
Our first week guide walks through all of it, night by night.
5. Give it a week before you judge it

The first two or three nights you notice it. Some people take it off once and put it back on. Some wake up with it on the pillow. Many people stop noticing it within a week, and many say the morning dry mouth is the first thing that changes.
That is why the starter box covers 90 nights, with 30 nose strips for the nights your nose needs help. And it is why the first box is refundable: write to us within 30 nights of delivery and we refund it. You do not send anything back.

Questions people ask before the first night
Can I still breathe normally with it on?
If your nose is clear, you breathe through it as you already do for most of the night. If something feels wrong, the slit lets air pass and the strip peels off in a second. Skip the tape on nights when your nose is already blocked.
Does the slit defeat the purpose?
No. The tape works by keeping your lips resting together, so your nose stays the easy route for air. It does not hold the lips apart, and with your mouth relaxed it lets very little air through. It is there for the moment your nose feels tight or you wake up and want a breath.
Does it hurt to take off?
Lift a corner and peel slowly toward the center. The adhesive is chosen to hold overnight and release in the morning. Dry skin with no balm at bedtime makes the morning easier.
Will it work with my beard?
Stubble is fine. The strip sits on the lips and the skin right around them. A full beard that covers the lips will hold less well, and we would rather say so now than after you have bought a box.
Does it stop snoring?
We do not make that claim. Mouth tape keeps the lips together so the nose does the breathing. Some people notice a quieter room, some do not. Snoring has many causes, and if yours is loud or you stop breathing in your sleep, see a doctor first.
What if I do not like it?
Write to us within 30 nights of delivery and we refund the first box. You do not need to send anything back. This applies to the first box only, once per customer.
Nine buyers, in their words
I have been using the strips for two months. My sleep has improved, I am learning to breathe through my nose, and there is no dryness in my mouth in the morning.
Surprisingly comfortable, and they last all night as long as I wipe the oils off my skin before applying. No mark after removal.
They stick well and last all night. They keep you from opening your mouth but still let air through.
